Sommerakademie 2012 Lecture by Dirk Snauwaert On Jef Geys and «After Army»

Nominator Dirk Snauwaert presents a lecture drawing possible correlations and contingencies between biography and artistic programmatic structures while resting upon the investigations of the artist Jef Geys. Geys is an artist who grew up in the Belgian city Leopoldsburg that served as and remains as an army camp annex. His childhood and adolescence – like that of many children of his generation who grew up during the militarisation of the second World War and the following Cold War – was inevitably marked and dominated by military presence and career opportunities in the armed forces. Snauwaert confronts issues of self-determination and self-reliability with biographical data.
