Sakhozi says NON to The Venus
The central figure in both Nelisiwe Xaba’s solos is Sarah Baartman, the 1789 born socalled «Hottentot Venus». An English ship’s doctor brought her to London in 1810 and exibited her in freak shows because of her highly unusual bodily features. Baartman is seen as a symbol of the repression of African women by the colonial masters and Xaba uses her as an allegory for her own journey from Soweto into the Eurocentric art world and the associated exoticising voyeurism.
